Bowls Unleashed!

The Bowls Australia 2018-2022 Strategic Plan has been released and is accessible via

The document certainly provides some interesting reading as to the way ahead for bowls in Australia.

The Vision Statement states “Our Vision is for all Australians to engage with bowls during their lifetime”.

Participation is now the key. Success is no longer measured purely on the numbers of pennant players at a club. It’s all about getting people through the gate for the first time and accepting that time restrictions and changes in society and family structures may no longer enable participants to commit to long term pennant competitions. Short form games and other options are being developed by the Bowls fraternity who recognise the need for change to get people onto the greens – be is social, community, pennant or barefoot bowls. The old saying that “if you don’t give it a go – you will never know” is so true.

Why not invite your family, friends, colleagues or mates to come down for a roll up? Bowls is the only game that can be played from womb to tomb!   Enquiries for bowls or functions always welcome.  Call The Hive on 9741 3229 to have a chat. We can tailor an event for your needs.

Italy v Australia Annual Challenge Event

Italy Australia day action shot.jpg

Oh what an amazing day. Full house. All greens full. Certainly makes one proud to be a member of a club capable of hosting 168 bowlers from across Melbourne Metro and as far away as St Leonards, Golden Square and Wonthaggi.

Our invited guests included Peter Maynard (Lord Mayor Wyndham), Joanne Ryan (Local Federal MP), Steve Pallas (Local Member, State Treasurer and Minister of Resources), Mervyn Clifton (Werribee RSL), John Faranda (President ISCW), Leone Brunato (Sponsor) and family members – Anthony Porto, Mario Pisano and Alex Angelini.

This event has been sponsored by the Brunato family (Lifestiles) for the past 42 years which is truly amazing. The day commenced with cooked breaky, a three course lunch, cheese and biscuits for afternoon tea and then BBQ prior to leaving. We are most fortunate to have the support of the Brunato family who make this annual event possible. Please ensure that you support our sponsor whenever you have the opportunity.

Despite the inclement weather it was a wonderful day with all four ten-end games played with great spirit and comradery.

The winning teams were:
– Aussies: Wal Stammer’s team from Golden Square
– Italian Winners: Jim Vernino’s team from Keilor

Overall Italy won by 23 shots and managed to retain the shield for the third year in succession.

Congratulations to Col Thompson for running yet another fabulous tournament despite the difficulties.

What can one say about the catering? Yolli and the ladies in the kitchen did a magnificent job yet again. So proud of you all.

Events such as this are testament to the best of multiculturalism and what our club has to offer.

On behalf of the Board, I would like to personally thank all who participated, assisted with the running, set up/down or played in the event.   (George Cairns – President)

Premier Ladies Team 2018.jpg

How exciting can it get?

Tuesday – First and foremost we had our Ladies Premier Team sting Clayton and get through to the grand final. Never thought that the game of bowls could be so exciting. At the end of a days play, the outcome hinged on the last few bowls of Lyn’s rink with both Lyn and Karen (Dusty) Brennan putting down crackers resulting in a 68/61 victory. Wonderful team effort by everyone including the supporters. The grand final is yours. Go for it. YOU CAN DO IT! Bring home the honey.

Thursday – we had Girls On The Green with six new ladies enjoying their introduction to bowls together with a return visit from 8 of the Mambourin ladies. Most of us take so much from granted. It is mind blowing to see the pleasure that these impaired ladies have derived from being able to get onto the green and participate in a sport using our Junior Jack Attack kit. Several of these ladies had never participated in any sport previously which attests to the fact that our sport is suitable for all ages, abilities and cultures. Win/Win.

Friday – we had around 30 mums and bubs at Bowling With Babies. What a hoot to see so much young blood on the greens. Whoever would have thought? And they love it and would like to continue post the pilot program. Win/Win.

And top it off we had 50+ on the greens for Friday Night @ The Hive. Our message is getting out there. We are a community club open to our diverse community. Our doors are open. Not only a potential source for new bowlers but a positive effect on club revenue not only for bowling but increased bar and raffle takings. Win/Win.

Word of mouth advertising is the best advertising that the club can get so it is our hope that every visitor goes away with a positive image of our club. It is up to each of us to ensure that visitors are made feel welcome and that we offer a hand of friendship to new faces arriving at the club.

Over the past few weeks our club has featured on the Bowls Victoria and WyndhamCity Twitter sites and received likes from Bowls Victoria, Bowls Australia and bowls clubs near and as far away as the UK which is great exposure “for the little bowls club hidden in the park at the end of the main street”.

Let’s keep the bowls rolling. Each and every member has a role to play.
