WBC Centennial 1922-2022

WBC Centennial Lunch

To celebrate this tremendous milestone, the club held a Centennial Lunch on Sunday 16th October 2022. This invitation only event was initially for Affiliated and Life Members as well as VIP guests, but was soon open to all members as seating availability increased.

Special guests included MP Joanne Ryan, MP Tim Pallas, Mayor of Wyndham City Council Peter Maynard, ISCW President John Menegazzo, Finance Director of Bowls Australia Gus MacIsaac, Treasurer of RSL Werribee Merv Clifton, our Club President Henry Barlow and Steve Weston represented Metro West Bowls.

Further special guests were Eric De Ravel from Williamstown BC and Adam Martin from Geelong East BC. Both bowling clubs were the first clubs Werribee Bowls Club played against back in 1922 so it was important for us to include them both in our celebrations.

WBC Centennial Bowls Tournament

Our Centennial Bowls Tournament (2 Bowl Triples) was unfortunately unable to go ahead due to unprecedented flood warnings at the time. Our heartfelt thanks to Estia Health Werribee for their sponsorship of this event and all those who registered to play on October 23rd 2022.

Stay tuned – we hope to announce a new date for 2023!

WBC Centennial Book – ‘For Whom The Bowls Toil’

The biggest achievement – aside from celebrating 100 years of lawn bowls – was the release of a very special publication on the history of WBC.  This well researched book includes a detailed history of WBC and its origins, to who we are today.  It is truly a celebration of our clubhouse, our Presidents and Champions, plus the memorable members of the last 100 years!

Our centennial book is titled For Whom The Bowls Toil and is the dedication of Reg Hassett who has generously written every word over the last three years with the enthusiasm and invaluable help of Denise Thompson and Lesley Robinson. One of our Life Members Ian Parker also greatly contributed to the facts and insights into writing such a memorial book.

Altogether these members have been tireless in their data collecting including the sourcing of elusive photographs from various decades.  What an incredible team!

If you would like to own your own copy of For Whom The Bowls Toil, please contact the club to register your interest. Copies are on sale for $20each.
